Happy World Music Day




June 21 is celebrated as 'World Music Day or as its famously called 'The Fête de la Musique', was first broached by American musician Joel Cohen in 1976. Cohen proposed an all-night music celebration on the year's longest day, the summer solstice. And now, its celebrated all over the world on the very same day with much fervour.

Celebration and music go hand-in-hand, no celebration is complete without music and music itself is in complete without a celebration. So, today, on World Music Day, I would like list out the way music changed the way the world and made it sit up and listen.

Now it has become a worldwide phenomenon with over 32 countries across the world celebrate the day in their own way.

On this day, musicians perform for free in parks, museums, train stations, castles etc. This helps in making all sorts of music accessible to the public. It gives an opportunity to commune and share a special bond through music.

The day is celebrated to promote peace and spread goodwill through music. World Music Day is celebrated in Argentina, Australia, Britain, Luxemburg, Germany, Switzerland, Costa Rica, China, India, Lebanon and several other countries.

Does gender define success & likeability ?


Success doesn’t make women less likeable, research finds

Does career success make women less likeable and men more so? According to Sheryl Sandberg, who catapulted the "likeability penalty" conversation into the spotlight with her career memoir Lean In, the answer is yes. But research by leadership development consultants finds this may not be the case.

According to Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman, women essentially maintain the same level of perceived people skills and empathy throughout their leadership careers, after a dip upon their first major promotion from supervisor to middle manager.

 
They also found that men faced a similar initial backlash, but didn't recover as women did.

Zenger and Folkman created a likeability index based on the findings of their 360-degree feedback surveys. They compared the results of 9,500 male leaders and 5,000 female leaders on the questions such as: "Are you/they truly concerned about developing others?" and "How well do you balance getting results with others' needs?" This included the leader's performance as scored by an average of 10 team members and managers.

They found that female supervisors had an average likeability percentile score of 60 at supervisor level, which dropped to 55 upon their promotion to middle manager. Their likeability score then stayed fairly level upon further promotions (56 at senior management and 55 at top management).

Male supervisors had an average likeability percentile score of 58, which dropped to 51 upon their promotion to middle manager. The average score didn't recover, declining to 49 for senior and top management.

While this study finds that formal assessments of women's soft skills, people management and perceived empathy recover, it doesn't necessarily address the social and emotional backlash that co-workers may be hesitant or unwilling to admit to in a professional review.

So it may be premature to dismiss Sandberg's suggestion that a woman's likeability suffers with success just yet.

Why Organizations need Leadership Development ?


Zenger Folkman Study: For Some Companies Leadership Development is Too Little, Too Late
New Zenger Folkman study reveals that companies need to start developing their leaders sooner in their career

Leadership development firm Zenger Folkman's recent study of a Silicon Valley software firm reveals companies are waiting too long to begin leadership programs.  After spending much time, money, and effort in developing leaders when asked about the one thing they would do differently in the future, they replied, "We'd begin this earlier in people's careers."

 
Why don't companies start leadership development earlier in people's careers? In their recently published Harvard Business Review blog and upcoming webinar, Jack Zenger, CEO of Zenger Folkman, explained that after analyzing 17,000 leaders it was, "no surprise to discover that the average age of all participants was 42." Less than 5 percent of all participants were under 27 years of age and only 10 percent were under the age of 30.



"Think of the advantage to be gained by this person beginning some formal leadership development activity at an earlier age, rather than waiting for nearly a decade to begin," Zenger said. "Prior research has shown that less than 10 percent of leaders, left to their own devices, will have any personal plan of development without the encouragement of some formalized process sponsored by their company."

There are many reasons why leadership development started earlier can benefit companies. It just makes sense because employees can:

    1.      Learn more easily at a young age
    2.      Avoid acquiring bad habits
    3.      Enjoy a longer time to practice
    4.      Benefit the organization with their improved skills
    5.      Enjoy success earlier

What can companies do to start making this change? Start focusing more on Gen Y.

"Today we are devoting roughly three-fourths of our development effort to Gen X and 20 percent on Gen Y," Zenger said. "We concur with our colleague from the Silicon Valley software firm—we would be wise to invest more in the development of the Gen Y group."

Why the investment disparity?  One of the stereotypes we have about the youngest generation is that they are more focused on themselves and less focused on company objectives.  After analyzing the data on these different groups we learned that the Gen Y group had the highest scores when it came to driving for results and practicing self-development.  This contradicts the image of complacent know-it-alls that is held by some.

About World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) is observed on June 5 every year to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity, the need to identify problems related to the environment and ways to take corrective action. It was on this day in the year 1972 that the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was formed. First celebrated in 1973, World Environment Day, also popularly known as Environment Day, is a means to tackle environmental challenges that include climate change, global warming, disasters and conflicts, harmful substances, environmental governance, ecosystem management and resource efficiency. 

The theme of the World Environment Day, on June 5, this year has been decided as 'Think, Eat and Save'.
The aim behind keeping this theme for the special day is to discourage the wastage of food and to promote the food loss campaign, encouraging people to reduce their food print. With the promotion of this theme on June 5, the environment lovers will persuade people to think before eating and hence contributing in saving the environment.













Environmentally-Friendly Business practices are happening now a days.The industrial sector must actively apply eco-efficiency principles in order to use less energy and materials for the same amount of output and to reduce emissions and waste. This requires the widespread adoption of environmentally-friendly production technologies, an increased use of recycled materials, and a greater emphasis on substituting goods with services. The financial and insurance sectors must also increasingly direct investment toward environmentally-sound projects.

Interdisciplinary Approach: Science and technology alone cannot resolve the impending environmental crisis. An interdisciplinary approach, which includes other branches of academic endeavors such as the humanities and social sciences, is needed to develop active research programs for a better understanding of the increasingly complicated environmental problems. The key is to recognise that humans and the natural environment are interdependent and part of a larger entity, the "Whole-Life-System."
